I had a brief phone conversation with a work friend today who related a conversation she had about me with another work friend:
Work Friend 1: So, I kind of think that we're going to need to help Kate out a lot when the baby comes.
Work Friend 2: Oh sure. Yeah, she doesn't have family close by so she'll need us to be around.
Work Friend 1: Uh, even if her family was right next door, she'd need some help.
I'm thinking that the implication is that I'm slightly off my rocker and also clueless. I assure myself that neither one of these is wholly true. The participants in this conversation were a therapist who's specialized in infants and young children and an elementary school teacher who has kids. How can I compete, really?
